Emmy Salerno
Lincoln Middle School, Shinnston, WV
Emmy Salerno is a 14-year-old track athlete from Lincoln High School in Shinnston, West Virginia, who has demonstrated remarkable dedication to the integrity of women’s sports. In April 2023, Emmy and her teammates made headlines when they refused to participate in the Harrison County middle school championships’ shot-put event in protest against the participation of a male trans-identifying athlete. Their silent stand led to their barring from future competitions, sparking a lawsuit and drawing support from West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.
Emmy’s passionate advocacy for fairness in women’s sports reflects her belief that collective action is necessary to protect the future of female athletics. Her courage in standing up for her values, despite facing personal consequences, makes her an inspiring Ambassador for the Riley Gaines Center, where she will continue to champion the cause of women’s sports.
